Weaving Workshops for a Collaborative Art Piece

We recently had the honour of hosting a series of collaborative weaving workshops led by esteemed Biripi weaver and artist Joedie Lawler. Held on Saturday mornings in May and June, these workshops brought together community members in a beautiful celebration of art and culture.

The series comprised three workshops on 18 May, 25 May, and 8 June 2024, each running from 10am to 1pm at the TUC Building, 2 Pulteney Street, Taree. Each session welcomed fifteen enthusiastic participants, ranging from complete beginners to those with a keen interest in weaving. Under Joedie’s expert guidance, attendees were able to explore traditional weaving techniques and contribute their own unique elements to a communal artwork.

These workshops were about more than just learning a new skill. They were an opportunity for different sectors of our community to come together, share stories, and create something meaningful. The collaborative nature of the project fostered a sense of unity and collective achievement, as participants worked side by side to weave individual pieces that will be combined into a larger artwork for our foyer.

Joedie Lawler’s patient and insightful teaching allowed participants to not only develop their weaving skills but also to gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of the craft. Each workshop was filled with creativity, laughter, and a sense of shared purpose, making it a truly enriching experience for all involved.

At the conclusion of the workshop series, Joedie will bring together the various elements created by participants into a single, cohesive piece. This collective artwork will be displayed in our foyer, accompanied by an Elder’s story that adds further cultural depth and context to the piece.

The impact of these workshops extends far beyond the physical artwork. Participants left with new skills, new friendships, and a profound appreciation for the art of weaving and the cultural heritage it represents. These workshops provided a space for creativity, learning, and connection, reinforcing the values that TUC stands for.

We look forward to unveiling our collaborative artwork in the foyer and celebrating the collective effort and creativity that went into its making. Stay tuned for more updates and join us in honouring the vibrant spirit of our community.
